Sedins' Assist ‘Clubhouse 36’ in Surrey, B.C.
Though they have been members of the Canucks their entire careers, it is not just hockey that defines Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s relationship with Vancouver.
Though they have been members of the Canucks their entire careers, it is not just hockey that defines Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s relationship with Vancouver.
Having spent so many years in the west coast Canadian city, raising their families and leading the Canucks, it comes as no surprise that they have become attached to Vancouver in a profound way.
Their bond with the community and the people has been strengthened through the creation of the Sedin Family Foundation.
Launched by Daniel & Marinette and Henrik & Johanna in 2013, the Foundation works with schools, community groups and social service agencies to identify needs and find creative and unique ways to enrich the lives of families and children.
Monday, they once again lent a helping hand through the Sedin Family Foundation by partnering with Surrey Schools and the YMCA of Greater Vancouver on the ‘Clubhouse 36’ program. Aimed at helping at-risk and vulnerable students in Surrey, B.C., the program provides an encouraging and nurturing environment for kids to build confidence and self-esteem through social and emotional support, as well as sports, art, peer mediation, leadership and academic learning.
“We are very pleased to support Surrey Schools with a program that enriches student learning outside of the classroom with interesting and fun activities offered in a safe space,” said Daniel Sedin in a media release. “For young children aged 6-12, school is the centre of their daily activity. Offering Clubhouse 36 in partnership with the YMCA in community schools makes it accessible as possible for students and their families.”
The Surrey School District is the largest of 60 districts in B.C., comprising 126 schools and 70,000 students. The program will impact many of these students, of which a high-number come from low income, single parent situations, as well as even a significant number of refugee families. The program aims to have a positive impact in a multitude of ways.
“We are proud to be a part of Clubhouse 36 and want to thank the other founding donors for their generous commitment in joining us to establish this program,” added Henrik Sedin. “We hope that, as it continues to grow, other families, businesses and community orgranizations will partner with us to support these young students and their families.”
