My Top 5 | Zach Hyman

When it comes to one of his biggest passions away from the rink, Toronto forward Zach Hyman does it by the book, so to speak.

An author of children’s books, the 26-year-old’s latest work, The Magician’s Secret, is his third release. The action-adventure picture book features a grandfather and grandson who celebrate the power of imagination and the magic of make believe.

Hyman stopped by NHLPA.com to share the Top 5 reasons he enjoys sharing his love of reading.

Hyman's favourite things about reading

1. Chapter One

“I love reading and writing. I always have. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to read books and write stories. That hasn’t changed at all over time. Reading is a huge part of my life and I want to inspire kids to read and write.”

2. Creating a bond

“Through writing books, I’ve been able to connect with kids, which I really enjoy. I love being able to talk to kids and inspire them in any way can. I feel very fortunate to be in that position.”

3. Life lessons

“Each of my books has a message, so I write books that portray a positive message that’s to believe in yourself, the power of self-belief and what it can do to make your dreams come true.”

4. Fan bond

“It allows me to interact within the community, to go visit kids at their schools and go to visit kids in the hospitals. I’ve got a hospital visit coming up at Sick Kids and I’m going to read to them when I go there. It allows me to meet people within our community, which is something I really enjoy doing as well.”

5. Adventures in babysitting

“As the oldest brother of five boys, I was a part-time babysitter on certain occasions, just helping out my mom and dad. I’d help them in whatever ways I could around the house, but telling my brothers stories was part of my role.”

Quotable:

“The guys (teammates) love it because they’re able to give it to their kids, nieces and nephews or other children. The younger guys always ask for one so they can give it to their younger siblings or family members. I get great feedback from the guys. Whenever a book is published, I’ll give a copy to all the staff and the players. They’ve all been very supportive.”
