Matthew Lombardi has had many coaches over the course of his years playing hockey, and he's had time to reflect on the qualities that he feels makes the strongest type of coach.

First, a coach must have as much respect for the players he's leading as the players have for him. Two-way trust and respect is key. It's also important for a coach to really know his or her team and be balanced in the way they push their players forward. Know when it's appropriate to be a little tough on a player and know when it isn't. Balancing discipline and fun is critical to improving your team's performance while keeping your players in love with the sport.
