Part of the NHLPA's mandate is to ensure that a player receives appropriate representation from his agent in all matters pertaining to the player's career. As a safeguard, the NHLPA has put in place an Agent Certification Program that governs the standards of professional conduct and education that an agent must continually attain. Without certification by the NHLPA, an individual cannot become a player representative.
Currently there are over 150 agents representing players in the NHL.
The first step to becoming a player representative involves completion of the "Application for Certification as an NHLPA Player Agent."
It is a thorough questionnaire that probes in great detail the applicant's background - both professional and educational.
