Managing stress through personal growth with Matt Benning
Stress and uncertainty were weighing on Matt Benning. From real estate to business development, he explains how NHLPA UNLMT helped to improve his overall mental well-being.
The stress and uncertainty that can accompany life as NHL player were weighing on Matt Benning.
“If I made one mistake, I would think about it for too long. It was not good for me. … It was visual on me. I lost my hair, my eyebrows were gone,” said the defenceman of his time navigating his sophomore season in the league.
With many factors at play, diversifying his focus off the ice through NHLPA UNLMT played a part in helping Benning improve his overall mental well-being.
From real estate to business development, Matt Benning explains how having pursuits, in addition to hockey, helped alleviate the mental pressure from fixating on the game alone.
“My stress levels were down, coming home to my wife and kids, I was more relaxed. At nighttime after dinner I’d spend an hour doing something other than hockey that got me excited.”
NHLPA UNLMT was born through the National Hockey League Players’ Association’s commitment to empowering players to connect, engage and excel to help them become the best they can be during their hockey career and for years to come.
