Mats Zuccarello (2-0—2) came through with two big goals Saturday for the New York Rangers, helping the team to clinch their opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 3-1 defeat of the Montreal Canadiens, winning the series 4-2.
Zuccarello's first goal of the game knotted the score at 1-1 after the Habs struck earlier in the first period. The goal marked New York's first power-play goal of the series.
Zuccarello scored the game-winner 13:31 into the same period off of a beautiful pass from Kevin Hayes to send Madison Square Garden, ever-so-hungry for a home win, into a frenzied state.
Zuccarello’s pair of goals marked the first multi-goal postseason performance of his career.
"It's incredible the impact he has with this team," Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh told reporters.
This is no understatement. Zuccarello has now tallied three goals in 2017 Stanley Cup Playoff action, after nearly two years ago to the day, when his career was left in question after a serious injury he suffered from a puck that was shot off his head.
The Rangers now wait on their second-round opponent, which will be determined as the Ottawa Senators and Boston Bruins wrap up their best-of-seven series.
