In a 4-1 win for the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night that gave them a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final, one thing was made clear – Matt Murray is having a rookie season for the ages.
With one Stanley Cup championship already under his belt, not only does Murray now share a unique distinction with Jacques Plante for being the only NHL goaltenders with rookie status to start in multiple Stanley Cup finals - they both incredibly hoisted the Stanley Cup months before their first full rookie regular seasons even began.
Murray turned aside 37 of 38 shots from the Nashville Predators in what was his 28th career Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance for an overall record of 20-7.
The win was his fifth of the 2017 postseason after his return to the net from injury, replacing Marc-Andre Fleury on May 17 in the previous round against the Ottawa Senators. The 23-year-old looked completely unflappable while turning in his third consecutive win, shutting down numerous quality chances from the Preds.
The Penguins take their lead on the road with the puck dropping on Game 3 at Bridgestone Arena Saturday night.
