NHL Participation In International Hockey

From the 1972 Summit Series to Rendezvous ’87, the Canada Cup, World Cup of Hockey, World Hockey Championship and the Winter Olympics – NHL players have proudly worn their country’s colours. As former NHLPA Executive Director Bob Goodenow put it,  “All the players, if you have a chance to put on the jersey from your country, there’s nothing that compares to it.”

The NHLPA has always focused on giving players the a high level of visibility around the world, particularly through international competition. The NHLPA’s membership reflects the sport's global diversity - in any given year, 23%-33% of NHL players are European. International events are an opportunity for these players to promote hockey in their native lands while paying tribute to their roots. Below are some historic and ongoing NHLPA-affiliated international hockey events and memorable moments.
