Hockey for Haiti: In the game for Haiti’s children
Damaged beyond repair by the January 2010 earthquake, Grace Children’s Hospital is one of Haiti’s leading treatment facilities for children with HIV, tuberculosis (TB), and other respiratory illnesses. Its vital services have been made even more critical since the quake, as TB spreads through prolonged exposure in close quarters such as the tent camps where thousands of Haitian families still live.
To help rebuild the hospital, the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), former NHL player Georges Laraque and World Vision Canada started Hockey for Haiti. And thanks to generous support from World Vision donors, the NHLPA, and players including Vancouver Canuck Dan Hamhuis, and Montreal Canadien P.K. Subban, Hockey for Haiti is making progress. Temporary inpatient and outpatient facilities are up and running, with hospital staff treating up to 300 patients daily. But there is still an urgent need to rebuild the main facility. Proper design and construction planning is essential for safety and permanence.
Please donate now to build a new, permanent hospital with expanded services for the children of Port au Prince. Your gift to Hockey for Haiti will help to save lives, and enable communities to move beyond devastation to recovery.
The hospital, operated by International Child Care, also offers quality health care to residents in surrounding neighbourhoods through mobile clinics and other community-based relief activities. Additional services include:
- General pediatric clinics
- Immunization and vitamin A distribution
- Reproductive health services
- Traditional birth attendant training
- Oral rehydration therapy and clean water initiatives
- Health education and literacy training
